With Visa Subclass 489, the four-year work visa, you can live, work, and bring your family to a certain region of Australia. There are two options for obtaining this visa: the Extended Stay option and the Invited option.

The Extended Stay track is available for candidates who have previously had a provisional visa under subclass 496, 495, 487, or 475. In order to apply for a Australian visa subclass 489 through the Invited Pathway, you must submit an Expression of Interest and receive an invitation. We’ll go over how to apply for each of the pathways.

What Advantages Do Skilled Regional Provisional Visas (Subclass 489) Offer?

Using a Subclass 489 visa, you and your family are able to:

  • Stay for a maximum of four years in Australia.
  • Live, work, and/or attend school in a certain Australian regional region.
  • The ability to enter and leave Australia while holding a valid visa

Eligibility Criteria for a 489 Visa

You are eligible for a 489 visa if you had one of the aforementioned visas for at least two years:

  • Regionally sponsored skilled immigration- category 475
  • Regionally sponsored skilled immigration- category 487
  • Regional skilled independent visa, subclass 495
  • Provisional visa sponsored by a skilled designated area, subclass 496

Only one of these visas may have been held by you, and you must have been enrolled in the extended pathway stream. If you were already nominated or sponsored for your existing skilled visa, you do not need to be again when you apply for visa 489.

If a state or territory nominates you for a skilled visa, you must reside in, work in, and attend school in a rural or sparsely populated area. However, if a relative sponsored you for a skilled visa, you must reside in, work in, or attend school in that particular region of Australia.

How can You qualify for a Subclass 489 Skilled Regional Provisional Work Visa?

The Invited Pathway and the Extended Stay Pathway are the two application processes for the Subclass 489 visa.

The extended Stay Pathway, Subclass 489 Visa

You must have previously had a provisional visa in subclass 496, 495, 487, or 475 in order to apply through this pathway. You are ineligible to apply for the Subclass 489 visa if you have held more than one of these visas.

The Invited Pathway, Visa Type 489

If you have never had a provisional visa, you should use the Invited Pathway to apply for the Australian visa subclass 489. You must be one of the following to be invited to apply for this visa:

  • selected by a State or Territory government body in Australia, or
  • sponsored by a qualified relative who resides in a designated Australian region.
